Opera.
What’s stopping you?

Ready to take a chance on opera? Here’s what to expect (and what not to expect) at a Catapult opera performance.

LISTEN UP

Get a taste of what opera can be, Catapult style.

First, forget what you think you know.

If you come with an open mind and open ears, be prepared to be swept away by an ingenious combination of drama, movement, music, and the human voice.

What opera isn’t

Just for people who know everything about opera. If you love music, theater, dance, or just a great show, you’re more than prepared. Of course, we hope Catapult can start you on your journey to becoming a real opera aficionado.

Only for old rich folks. Or grand halls, though we love those, too. You’ll be surprised at how accessible, relatable, and down to earth the music and stories are, and by the diverse community of people that love and support opera today.

Overly formal or stuffy. You won’t be expected to dress or act a certain way. You will be expected to give your full attention to the performance, and help create an environment that supports the performers and respects the other audience members.

Played only by traditional orchestras. We’ve performed and commissioned works for all sorts of music ensembles—acoustic and electronic, rock- and pop-based, international and indigenous, and everything in between (like our collaboration with Celisse).

Old fashioned, out of date, and dull. We still enjoy the masterpieces of the 18th and 19th centuries, but opera flourished in the 20th century, and vital, exciting, and relevant work (like our digital opera SWANN) is being produced today by Catapult and other forward-thinking companies around the world.
